Kolkata Metro smart cards now valid for 10 years, security deposit cut to ₹50
Kolkata Metro has announced important changes to its smart card policy to make it more convenient for commuters. The validity of Metro smart cards has been extended from one year to ten years. This change is intended to encourage more passengers to use them regularly.
A Metro spokesperson shared that the refundable security deposit for smart cards has been reduced to ₹50 from ₹80. The minimum price for issuing a card has also dropped to ₹100, down from ₹150. Passengers will now pay a ₹50 security deposit and a ride value of ₹52, which includes a ₹2 bonus.
The spokesperson further explained that the validity of new smart cards will start from the first swipe at the gates, not from the issuance date. Existing valid cards will also see their validity extended to ten years upon recharge. Commuters will still receive a five percent bonus on every recharge.
These new rules will take effect from September 25. Metro officials believe these changes will greatly enhance passenger convenience. “During this month alone, over 50,000 smart cards have already been sold. With the new rules, we expect even higher demand because smart cards help commuters avoid long lines at booking counters, especially during peak hours and festive seasons,” the spokesperson added.
Smart cards will still be available at both booking counters and self-operated digital ticket vending machines. Additionally, passengers can recharge their cards at these machines, online, or at booking offices, ensuring more flexibility and ease of use.
